In its ongoing efforts to address the increasing challenges, Caritas Lebanon hosted Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Paolo Borgia, Minister of Health Dr. Firas Abiad, UNHCR Representative Ivo Freijsen, WFP Country Director Matthew Hollingworth, Patricia Hakmeh from Trocaire, Cedric Choukair from CRS, Hombeline Dulière from CAFOD, and Dina Hajjar from Caritas Switzerland, in the presence of Bishop Antoine Bou Najm, Caritas board members and directors.
During this meeting, Father Abboud emphasized the crucial role of strong partnerships in advancing the shared mission of safeguarding human dignity and supporting the most vulnerable, striving together to foster positive change through collective expertise and compassion. It also highlighted the significant obstacles that lie ahead following the anticipated ceasefire.
Minister Firas Abiad expressed his gratitude for the strong collaboration with Caritas Lebanon and the opportunity to continue serving the community, despite the ongoing crisis.
The Apostolic Nuncio highlighted the importance of charity and solidarity, stressing that collective action is key to supporting those in need. He called for the promotion of belonging, mutual kindness, and peace in times of adversity. Expressing confidence in Lebanon’s ability to overcome challenges, he emphasized that, with the support of the state and social partners, the nation will prevail. He concluded by thanking all those involved with Caritas for their vital work.
The UNHCR representative highlighted the long-standing partnership with Caritas and emphasized the need to intensify efforts as winter approaches and the crisis continues. He praised Caritas’ strong logistics, extensive network, dedicated staff and volunteers, and its ability to respond quickly to evolving needs across Lebanon. He expressed hope for a future shift from crisis management to supporting more proactive and positive initiatives.
The WFP Country Director expressed gratitude for Caritas’ unwavering support, which has been instrumental in enhancing the effectiveness of their interventions. Thanks to Caritas’ proactive preparedness before the crisis, WFP was able to quickly scale up its efforts. Caritas consistently demonstrates compassion and solidarity with vulnerable and displaced individuals, regardless of their background—an ongoing commitment that is both invaluable and deeply appreciated.
