Caritas Lebanon held its second General Assembly for 2024 on Saturday, December 14, at its headquarters in Sin El Fil. The assembly began with a Divine Liturgy led by Caritas Lebanon general supervisor, His Excellency Bishop Antoine Bou Najem. In his sermon, Bishop Bou Najem emphasized that true discipleship of Christ requires a spirit of service and humility, noting that giving is not limited to money but also includes time, love, and care for others. He confirmed that Christmas represents an opportunity for repentance and inner transformation, urging everyone to live the Gospel and embody God’s love in their lives.
The General Assembly was officially opened with the presence of representatives from the Catholic churches in Lebanon, including:
– His Excellency Bishop Antoine Bou Najem, representing His Beatitude Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros Al-Rahi.
– His Excellency Bishop Michel Aoun, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Assembly of Catholic Patriarchs and Bishops in Lebanon.
– His Excellency Bishop Charles Murad, representing the Syrian Catholic Patriarch Mar Ignatius Joseph III Younan.
– His Excellency Bishop Krikor (Robert) Badih Shah, representing the Armenian Catholic Patriarch Raphael Bedros XXI Minassian.
– Dr. Nicolas El Hajj, representing the Patriarch of Antioch and All the East of the Melkite Greek Catholics, Joseph Absi.
Also present were several superiors and superiors general of religious orders, representatives of bishops, Caritas members, regional heads, and administrators.
In his opening speech, Caritas President Father Michel Abboud emphasized the importance of the humanitarian work carried out by Caritas, highlighting the challenges the association faces amidst the economic and social crises affecting Lebanon. He stated:
“We meet today to reaffirm our commitment as a Church to our social mission, and to strengthen the humanitarian work that embodies the Church’s message in serving our people. Thanks to your dedication and faith, Caritas has continued to provide its services despite the crises, and we aim to continue our efforts with transparency and in partnership with donors.”
He also spoke about the organization’s response to displacement crises, where Caritas provided medical care and food relief in coordination with various organizations.
Treasurer Mr. Nadim Nader presented the 2025 budget, followed by Attorney Fadi Karam, General Secretary, who reviewed the activities carried out by the organization from the beginning of the year until the end of September 2024. At the end of the session, the General Assembly approved the new budget by majority vote, reflecting the members’ consensus to continue supporting Caritas’ mission.
The assembly concluded with a fellowship meal, where everyone participated in an atmosphere of unity and solidarity, reaffirming their commitment to Caritas’ mission in serving humanity and promoting social justice.
